What is Good Design?

As a designer, I firmly believe that the true value of a good design lies not just in its initial aesthetic appeal when executed on-site, but in its ability to effectively serve its intended purpose over time, maintaining both form and function.

From my perspective, the key to creating a truly great design considers the longevity of the materials used, the durability of finishes, and how well it maintains its look and performance over time.

When selecting materials for a design, it’s crucial to choose ones that are durable, resistant to wear and tear, and suitable for the intended environmently and functionally. For example, in outdoor designs, materials must withstand exposure to the elements like UV rays, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. In interiors, factors such as surface abrasion, staining, and cleaning ease are important to consider.

Equally most important are the fixing details—how the materials are joined and supported. Poorly executed joints or connections can compromise the strength and durability of a design, leading to wear or even failure over time.

Ultimately, I view design as a balance between aesthetics and practicality. The goal is to create something that not only looks good but continues to perform and retain its appeal as it interacts with the world over time. When both of these elements are considered together, it’s what truly defines a successful design.

Conclusion

a good design not only meets an immediate visual need; it is about the lifecycle of its materials, the durability of its finishes and how it successfully satisfies a need over time.” Carefully considered materials chosen for both environment and use can be key to long-life performance. And the quality of construction, especially the specifics of how materials are joined and supported, is intrinsic to the folly’s strength and resilience. Ultimately, the best designs are those that strike a harmonious balance between aesthetic beauty and practical longevity, ensuring they remain effective and visually captivating for years to come.
